Democrats Win Control of US House, Vowing to Challenge Trump’s Policies
Democrats are set to regain control of the US House of Representatives after a strong performance in the November 3, 2026 midterm elections, according to projections by NBC News. Their victory is expected to give them greater power to scrutinise President Donald Trump’s administration and challenge his policies.
NBC News estimates that Democrats will secure about 255 seats, comfortably above the 218 needed for a majority. The projected result would represent their strongest House majority in nearly two decades.
The party also flipped several Republican-held seats across the country, including in Pennsylvania, Virginia, New Jersey and North Carolina. The results were widely viewed as a rejection of Trump’s policies, particularly his immigration crackdown, tariffs and handling of the war with Iran.
Democratic House leader Hakeem Jeffries is expected to become the first Black Speaker of the House when the new Congress takes office on January 3, 2027.
The new majority will give Democrats control of House committees, allowing them to launch investigations, issue subpoenas and examine the activities of the Trump administration. Some lawmakers have already pledged to investigate alleged corruption involving Trump’s family and business interests, as well as the conduct of immigration enforcement agencies.

Democrats have also outlined legislative priorities, including reversing cuts to Medicaid, extending Affordable Care Act subsidies and restoring congressional authority over tariffs.
The outcome is a major setback for Republicans, who have controlled the House during the early part of Trump’s second term. It also means the president will no longer have unified Republican control of Congress, creating a more challenging political environment for his administration.
